“It’s me. My expertise. The relationships I’ve built.”
That’s what most agency and consultancy founders say when I ask why their clients stay. Sometimes it’s something else; it’s speed, or a process nobody else has, or deep specialist knowledge. It’s always something special.
Most systems work skips that question entirely and goes straight to automating everything, integrating AI, moving as fast as is possible.
Which sounds right, it seems logical, and systems should be logical. But it’s missed a critical point and is building on a foundation that nobody’s looked at.
Because the answer to ‘why clients stay’ is the thing your systems need to protect, above anything. And you also need to know whether it’s a foundation you can actually build on. Whether it’s compatible with the business you’re actually trying to create.
If it isn’t, that should change before anything else does.
Most people start with the systems. I start with that question.
Why do your clients stay?
