Building for founders who stay

The advice is always to step back. Delegate your brilliance, remove yourself from delivery. But why? It's your business.

8:30 Monday. Coffee in hand, calendar full of things I chose, and not wanting to do a single one of them. I’ve thought about why that is.

That’s my nightmare. Not failing, not running out of money. Waking up one day and realising I’ve built an agency I don’t actually want to run.

I see a version of this pattern constantly in my ops work. There are two types of founders. One tells me on the first call they’re planning an exit, they want the business to run without them so they can sell it or step away. Clear goal, easy to design for.

The other gets excited about the bits they love. The client work, the creative, the problem-solving. They’re often a core reason clients buy in the first place.

The advice that second type always gets is to step back. Delegate their brilliance, remove themselves from delivery, scale properly. But why? It’s their business. Why would you design a business that removes you from the thing that makes you want to get up on Monday morning?

The problem is that staying in the work without anything around you eventually breaks things. Projects drift, a deadline gets missed, a client goes quiet, and you only notice once something’s already gone wrong.

That’s why the first thing I do with any founder is figure out what we’re actually trying to protect: what they want to keep doing, what the business genuinely needs from them, and what the version of this looks like in two years, not just next month.

Once that’s clear, you build the ops backwards from it, protecting the thing that matters instead of designing it out.

Plenty of founders I work with never want to step back. Building for exit would be building the wrong thing entirely. I build for those ones.

If this resonates with where your business is right now, the fit call is 15 minutes, free, and there's no obligation.
